Counseling

Personal and family counseling is designed to assist you and your key relationships to create and live the life you love.  The philosophy and model of Live On Purpose is one of positive psychology, meaning that you won’t receive a diagnosis or have your insurance company billed for services. When you think of your mental health and relationships on a spectrum, way over on the left side is sickness, illness, pathology, and diagnosis. Somewhere in the middle of the spectrum is health, meaning that you are not sick. Compared to physical health, you might be sick in bed with a fever and everything else associated with illness. There comes a time, if you take care of yourself, that you stop being sick and you can get out of bed again. That doesn’t mean that you are truly fit, thriving, or prospering. At the right end of the spectrum is the life that you love. The Live On Purpose model focuses on assisting you to go from good to great as you create and live the life you love.  The following types of clients generally do very well with this approach:

  • Individuals who are prepared to engage in a process of discovering their purpose.  My clients are open to seeing themselves and the world in a way that creates more possibilities for them, and are willing to address the ways that they might be getting in their own way.  Many of my individual clients are success oriented and entrepreneurial, with a commitment to live life based on timeless principles of happiness.
  • Couples who have strong reasons for improving their relationship in the interest of preserving and defending families.  Some of the couples who work with me have good marriages, and are ready to create a great marriage.  Others may have very challenging circumstances that are threatening the integrity of their marriage and family.  I have a six-session process that has proven to be very powerful in assisting these couples in a way that they rate their marital satisfaction much higher upon completion.
  • Families who are seeking improvement in their relationships or family dynamics.  I have a particular expertise in working with parents and children in this context, including teen or young adult children.  This area of my practice also includes dealing with issues such as anxiety or depression from a collaborative team approach in the context of positive psychology.  For motivated clients, a three-session process will yield significant results.

I strongly prefer to meet with my clients face-to-face, although telephone sessions are available as well.  For clients who are not conveniently located in proximity to my office (in Orem Utah), the free service of Skype has provided a very workable alternative for face-to-face meetings.
