Coaching

Listen to Dr. Paul's 4 p's:

Dr. Paul's Coaching Model:

Life coaching is a service that has been designed to assist individuals, couples, families, and organizations to achieve their highest potential. Coaching is a deliberate process of focused conversations to create an environment for individual, family, and corporate prosperity, living on purpose, and sustained improvement in all aspects of life.

This is accomplished through the four P’s which are:

Principle:  Add power to your life through principle.  Principles are always true in every context.  Natural laws are examples of principles - like gravity.  Gravity will act on you whether you believe in it or not - and whether you like it or not.  Identify the correct principles that will create freedom in your life, and get busy applying them.  Principles govern.

Paradigm:  Add power to your life through paradigm.  The most powerful concept I have discovered in psychology is that there are two paradigms (victim vs. hero).  You can choose which paradigm you embrace, and the outcome of each is sure.  If you adopt a victim paradigm, you will experience misery and captivity.  If you adopt a hero paradigm, you will experience happiness and liberty.

Purpose:  Add power to your life through purpose.  Your life is going somewhere for sure.  Where it goes depends a lot on where you aim it.  Develop a personal mission statement, and also one for your marriage, family, business, or other ventures.  Start living on purpose.  The phrase, “Live On Purpose” has a nice double meaning – that you have a clear purpose or mission for your life, and that you do it intentionally.

Passion: Add power to your life through passion. Passion is the driving force that motivates you. After you have successfully learned principles, the challenge is to apply those principles in your life in meaningful ways. This requires change, and to change you must find ways to get leverage on yourself. Passion for life increases dramatically as you begin to spend more of your time doing the things that you love for the people who love what you do.

Why Coaching?

The most successful and prosperous people master the four P’s and enlist other skilled people into their team. They build a network of other people that helps them to identify and quickly remove any barriers to their success and happiness. They also develop a proactive approach to cleaning up the messes in their lives and relationships, enabling them to move beyond old snags to new levels of prosperity.

Most people already have what it takes to succeed, and they probably already know many of the principles and strategies that are covered in a coaching relationship. Many people believe that they can do all of this themselves, if they just had more discipline. The fact of the matter is that they don’t do it themselves – for a lot of reasons.

Think of it in a sports framework – the team has all of the talents and skills to win. A coach brings to the team perspective, structure, accountability, oversight, and training that help the team to succeed at a level far beyond what they can do without the coach. The coach is also able to identify from a unique perspective any barriers to success, and can implement strategies to overcome and move beyond such barriers. The coach is a key individual in identifying the various resources that are available to the team, and helping to ensure that talents, skills, and abilities are used to their highest potential.

How is coaching different from therapy or traditional counseling?

The field of psychology, and the mental health industry in particular, is based traditionally on a mental illness or pathology model. Traditional psychotherapeutic counseling is typically modeled after the medical industry, with reliance on health insurance companies for payment. The mental health benefits on an insurance plan are likely to be separate from other medical benefits and may require separate co-payments or deductibles. This model requires submission of diagnoses and treatment plans for the provider to be reimbursed. It also operates with the assumption that there is something wrong, disordered, or unhealthy about the person receiving services which creates a “medical necessity” for the service. In a coaching model, there is no presumption of illness or pathology. Insurance companies are not billed because they won’t pay for coaching—there is no “medical necessity”. Decisions about what is done in the course of coaching are determined by the client together with the coach, rather than by a policy or off-site clinical review team as is the case with many insurance plans.  If you think of your mental health on a spectrum, therapy deals with the end of the spectrum that focuses on pathology, or illness.  Use your physical health as a comparison.  There may be times when you are sick, in bed, with a fever.  There comes a time when you are no longer sick and you get out of bed to resume your activities.  Just because you are no longer sick, we cannot conclude that you are fit and thriving.  In a similar way, coaching picks up where therapy left off – but on the other end of the spectrum.  Coaching can help you go from being “not sick” to being truly prosperous in every way.

What can I expect?

Life coaching is structured around several different levels, depending on the preferences of the client regarding frequency and intensity. At the most basic levels, clients may choose to start with listening to Live On Purpose radio, enjoying the weekly “M-Power” e-zine, attending seminars and retreats, or accessing audio/video recordings of presentations given by Dr. Paul. At a higher level, clients attend a group coaching experience (either in person or telephonically) on a weekly basis with Dr. Paul or a member of his coaching staff. This coaching group is quickly becoming very popular because of the opportunity to network and exchange with other producers in the context of a dynamic educational experience. Individual consultation and coaching is also available in several different packages, from brief telephone sessions through varying levels of intensity to highly customized packages which may include private corporate training and education in addition to personal and relationship coaching. Marriage coaching is also popular among success-oriented people who realize that the home environment and their primary relationship is a key to their success in business or other areas of their life. A typical couple’s package would include conjoint sessions for about an hour and a half twice a month for three months. As we refine our programs and improve delivery systems, other exciting options are on the horizon including video conferencing, home-based personal development programs, and mentoring programs.

Please Contact Dr. Paul if you would like to schedule a coaching appointment or seminar.
